Chaos Walking series, Patrick Ness – Books for your Bestie.

Have you heard of Chaos Walking? Of course you have. It’s amazing. Incredible. One of a kind. Noisy. There’s also an awesome dog, who kind of talks.

With different POV chapters, Patrick Ness absorbs you into this awesome, futuristic but totally recognisable world. You feel connected to these characters on a super close level, you feel their pain, joy and their confusion – it’s one of the best rollercoasters you will ever go on. There’s a teenage boy protagonist with so much angst he doesn’t know what to do with it, a super cool female lead who is so mysterious she doesn’t speak for ages, AND a pretty scary Mayor who rides around on a horse like he owns the place (well, he kind of does).

These books don’t shy away from the big stuff – death, gender politics, indigenous affairs, and just generally pushing people to their limits. How far would you go protect the people you love? Who would you be if you had enormous amounts of power? Patrick Ness deftly explores what is to be human and what it means to be a part of a society. These questions are expertly weaved into the narrative and make the reading experience that much better. Who doesn’t love a story that really makes you think, a story that sticks with you long after you’ve put it down?
